Humidity

Humidity refers to the amount of water vapour present in the air. Water vapour is the gaseous state of water and is invisible to the naked eye. The humidity rating is given as a percentage, which describes the relative humidity of a room. Humidity is important as humans depend on perspiration to regulate their body temperatures, and high humidity affects this process, reducing the evaporation of moisture from the skin.

The amount of water vapour in the air is also the primary factor for the development of moulds, and having a high humidity increases the risk for moulds.

The ideal range for humidity is between 30% to 50%. Keeping humidity below 50% prevents dust mite infestations, mould, and mildew, and helps control the spread of bacteria. Lower humidity levels also reduce the emission of VOCs.

Low humidity, which can occur during the winter months, can cause dry skin, irritated throat and itchy eyes. Skin will be dry and can become scaly, and can worsen or trigger conditions like eczema.

Viruses like the flu virus also last longer and can survive in a room for extended periods of time with very low humidity.

Finally, low humidity can cause damage to woodwork and furniture, cause warping, shrinkage and gaps to appear.

Too much humidity causes condensation in your home, which can stain the walls, ceilings and furniture. It’s also a high-risk factor for moulds, which can cause odours and respiratory problems. Extended periods of high humidity can also cause rot and structural damage.

High humidity can also trigger allergic reactions and is a problem for people with respiratory conditions.

High humidity, those above 70%, increases the level of moisture in the house. Bacteria and dust mites thrive in moist and humid environments. It also breeds harmful moulds that can worsen allergies and asthma attacks.
